I saw the movie Return to Paradise and was wondering a US citizen could be given the death penalty in a foreign country.

Here are some of the countries where it could happen:

China
Saudi Arabia
Pakistan
Iran
Iraq
Sudan

And, of course, an American citizen can be executed without leaving home.

These 7 countries (including the USA) lead the world in executions.

Just as the US can extradite a foreign citizen and charge him/her with a crime, so can a foreign country subject a citizen of the US to its penal law system. Granted, if the US citizen is living in the US, extradition is rather difficult, but it is possible. If the US citizen is on foreign soil, then prosecution under the laws of that country is quite simple. Think about the foreign terrorists that have been tried in the US (southern and eastern districts of NY have had their fare share). Those defendants have faced the death penalty in our country.

In a heartbeat. And countries that exercise the death penalty don't keep the offenders on death row for 10 or 20 years.

sure.

We put citizens of other countries to death here when they brake our laws and are sentenced by our courts to death.

Our citizens are expected to obey the laws of foreign countries or suffer the punishments set out by that countries legal system.

yeah, doesnt make you special or above their laws. but like the other guy said it depends on the country, if we are on good terms theyd probably just give you life in prison to avoid a political dispute
