Yes, I have. What is happening is that the batting inside the quilt has deteriorated. If the quilt was made by a friend or relative, it may have real and sentimental value and ought to be repaired. (If this is a department store quilt, never mind, just replace it.) Quilts tied with little strings of yarn, rather than quilted with stitching, are more susceptible to this.

To repair it, you can undo the ties, or pick out the stitching, and remove the binding along one edge, so that it can be turned inside out like a pillow case. In my quilt, the interior batting had degraded to a pile of little cotton pills that were a mess to clear out and dispose of. You can then gently wash the inside-out quilt, get new batting for it, and contact a professional quilter (through a quilt shop) to have it re-assembled.

I reassembled mine with new (higher quality) batting spray basted to one side of the quilt, so it wouldn't bunch in the corners when I turned it right-side to. I then loaded it onto a professional quilting machine and re-quilted it. When done it was good as new and will last many more years, even if washed frequently.

Yep. Most of the time I just left it but if it was one I really liked, I would cut open the area at the seam (It's usually bunched up in the corners or ends) take out the old stuff and put in some flat stuff I picked up from Walmart. Just make sure you anchor it on the fabric or it will bunch up again as soon as you wash it. Good luck!!!

Not sure how bunched your quilt is but here is what I would do:
Try to smooth out the cotton from the corners back to the sides--as much as possible.
Do a zig zag stitch on the outer edges of your quilt and where ever else you think it needs it.
This should hold the cotton in place and not bunch up as much.
Wash on "gentle cycle".

WOW !! Jeffrey, I'm impressed at your highly skilled expertise. :))

I agree-it is annoying--but gives a good reason to go buy a new one. Isn't shopping fun? Decisions, decisions, decisions! Take care.

put it in the dryer with "air" only, no heat and put in something heavy, like tennis balls, tennis shoes and let it go around for about a half hour. That should help.
