im thinking yes because there are other ways of showing geography

Geography is-
* The study of the earth and its features and of the distribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity.
** The study of the physical characteristics, especially the surface features, of an area.

Maps were created to explain and understand better the theories and facts regarding the physical characteristics, and features of earth, distribution of various features and effects of human activities. Maps are simply, tools to explain and understand. If maps were not created, man would have found some other means to explain the spatial aspects of the earth.
The study of Geography would exist whether or not the maps were created. And you have yourself answered your question...

Maps do not make geography - they are tools to help us understand and represent, but if they did not exist, geography would still be there.
