3 1/2 yr old Tiger Oscar, 8" from tip to tip, living alone in 40 gal tank. Water slightly acidic and hard. Partial water changes done about 6gal every two weeks. Undergravel filter w/ powerhead and Aquaclear 300 outside filter. Fed Hikari brand Oscar tablets, occasional frozen bloodworms and frozen brine shrimp. He gets live feeder goldfish every now and then, but only after they've been quarantined for at least a week.

Recently Oscar has developed symmetric pock marks about the size of a BB and grayish-white in color about 1/16 " apart around his whole jaw (from one side of face to other.) Doesn't seem to be in any discomfort, and he eats well, but the marks resemble the "hole in the head disease" from the '80's. But I believe that was parasitic and was generally one lesion only.

Does anyone think I should be concerned?

BTW...I've had freshwater tropicals all my life; have successfully bred angels and have kept many happy, healthy discus; so I'm not a noob.

Detail...now I'm kicking myself for not Googling 'hole in the head disease', but it was just a wild stab; I didn't think it happened anymore. But that's almost certainly what he has after seeing the pictures. Damn I hope I can save him.

If you return here, please tell me what you can about the carbon affect...I rinse it occasionally but change it even more less. Thanks.

Thanks Copperhead. 11 points ASAP.

Edit 2: That comment about the carbon should have read "less often," but apparently you can't fix additional details once you hit submit.

I'd agree that it sounds as though this was HITH you're describing. It's not limited to just one mark: http://www.wheelchairanglingandhamradio.co.uk/images/oscar-hith.jpg , http://www.wheelchairanglingandhamradio.co.uk/images/oscar-hith.jpg , http://www.jbl.de/img_med/spirohexol_dis_k.jpg

You're correct that there's a parasite (hexamita) involved, but there have also been connections to diet and use of carbon in the tank. Flagyl (Metronidazole) is the medication of choice for this.

I too have constantly puzzled why the moon constantly suggests the equal part to us. the reply is sure it dose rotate, in any other case each 15 days we could see the othe part because it orbits across the Earth. in step with technology, gadgets circling round each and every different, generally tend to sluggish each and every others rotation down. They did not say why however I could love to know the way it is performed. They declare that when the Earth and moon had been shaped, an afternoon on the planet used to be 6 hours, they did not say what the moon used to be. The moon used to be very near at the moment and so they each and every had plenty of influence on each and every different. The moon being smaller finally stopped spinning to the factor that it suggests the equal part to us always. The Earth slowed, via the moon's have an impact on,to as soon as each 24 hours. The Earth having a lot more mass, did not sluggish up to the smaller moon. In different phrases, in the event that they had been each and every the equal measurement because the moon, they could each be rotating as they rotated round each and every different, however each displaying the equal facets to one another. Hope this is helping.
