We live in south Georgia (your mileage may vary)...
About two years ago, we paid $45 for our female when she was 4 months old -no papers, just a pet goat - she has since given birth to twins which will turn one year old next month. All three are spoiled rotten!!! Before the twins were born, the nanny was quite lonely - she is much more content now.

A fifty pound bags of Sweet Goat Feed is around $10 (it contains wheat, barley, oats, corn and molasses) and a square bale of hay is around $3 - but our goats won't eat hay. Did I mentioned they are spoiled? They do love to browse on oak leaves that we bring to them each evening...

The cost will vary depending on your location and whether or not the animal is registered. Your run of the mill pygmy with no papers will cost around 50-100 dollars depending on age or if she is bred. A pygmy with papers will start at 250 and up to around 500 or more.

Hay is around two or three dollars a bale and a pygmy may eat a bale a week. Grain is about eight dollars a bag and that should last around three weeks. I suggest getting two goats because they tend to get lonely.

The other cost you may want to factor into your decision is vet care.. do you live in a farming community with easy access to a vet who handles goats.. (many standard vets don't, you need the ones that look after cows and horses as well). Just something you may want to look into first..

OH, the other thing.. make sure you are legally able to have one where you live.. I know many places that have restrictions on "farm animals" as pets in any area that is not zoned as an agricultural area.
