I can say why I would. I am a person that looks for the best in people, when I see it, I think they deserve some positive thoughts, so I would call you darling or honey. I do that with all sorts of people, even guys.
I certainly do not mean to be offensive though.

I think that is just some people's personality. My boyfriend who is 40 years old gets called that sometimes by old ladies. I've even been called that by ladies and I'm female. I don't think nothing of it if they are older, but if they aren't much older than me, it's kinda weird. BTW, most nine year olds I've been around are brats not darlings.

Sorry, but we really don't mean no harm. Take it as a complement. It is the same as calling some dear, dearie or you sweet thing you. They just like you a lot! So be cool with it all. Have a good evening darling!

I call everyone darling, darling! lol Well almost everyone that is. That's just my word. I don't think there's an age limit on the word darling.

Darling is a term to let you know they like you. You should be happy being called darling.
They may call a little girl darling but when you are 23 it has a whole lot different meaning.

being from the deep south, it seems like everyone younger calls the older woman ma'am (regardless of how much older) . I can't seem to recall a situation where an older person called me ma'am though, so I think that's weird-- i wouldn't call it unfair though. as for the medical records, nobody should be reading except dr and medical staff and it depends on the dr's personal views. 'patient' or 'female' is what i've normally seen.

I don't know, some people just seem to get that. I'm 43 and get called "Honey" a lot by men and women, including some who are younger than me. (I am not refering to anyone I'm dating.) There are worse things.

No, as a matter of fact, they don't! You must have something that appeals to women for so many to call you that. Be happy, it's better than being called something derogatory.
