We used to have a lot of kittens out in the barn and as soon as they were born they had names. I think it was to be able to tell which one we were talking about. So it would be yours.

Hi,
To name something is to label something to distinguish it among others. Its label defines its direction, not mine for it is not for me to name and ‘direct’. Their Fate is not in my hands. What’s in a name? People will for instance go by their first impressions perhaps on some Avatars, some might be labelled to define a character/personality according to its symbol. Others have no bearing on its direction/personality. The persona emerges as a relationship develops and the name takes on a quality of its own.

I think naming a thing helps define my direction, not the 'something.'

I think there are numerous factors involved....these are just a few...I am sure there are more.....

some of us have thoughts that reflect deep symbology and meld into spirituality....if they name something, chances are it would define their own direction....Unless they fully intended to name something in accord with another's path....and even then I think the symbology would still reflect much of their own direction....this is Mystical Naming......(an example of this....the name flutterbypurr)

there are those who just give names based upon cuteness, faddish whims or for dramatic appeal and the name is (I think) misdirected entirely....
Mindless Naming....

Worst of all, are the marketers who search high and low for names to compel us to consume their product and the direction of that naming is to manipulate and suck us all in like a black hole....Agenda Naming

Some analytical, scientific minds bestow names that they regard to best describe or fit the named thing and this does actually define the direction of the named thing....This is an honest, forthright, Functional Naming....

as for me.....I like the Mystical Naming....I like to be aware of my direction and stay on that path...and I am especially fond of all the beauty of the symboloby involved.....

Aside from the obvious, naming gives order to the chaos. It gives people a common reference.

Now if we go to the quantum level, where some answers have alluded to, the act of mere observing changes the object. Naming is another form of observing so it also must change the object.

I have to name my new baby... and I guess naming him will neither define his or my direction.. its just a name and at any point he could change it. (well once he gets older anyway)

That's a tricky question. I named my daughter after me, I lost a child before her and could not conceive again, I had artificial insemination and was blessed by having her. I was so thankful to God and to the miracle that I had to name her after me. She has grown into a beautiful woman, one that I treasured and taught her what is good in life and how many blessings we receive.

is your avatar name an attempt by you to define your direction or ours? Mine is a description of my world. It is all about perception of our world and our path.....

I name it the direction I want it to go.
Then I change or modify the name as it progresses. Hence nicknames.

Mine.... it allows me to choose how I proceed with my own ways to move forward. It gives me the direction by my definition of it.
