Atoms have different types (or flavors, if you like). Each atom with the same number of protons has the same characteristics as all other atoms with that number of protons. So, we group atoms by how many protons they have. If an atom has 1 proton, it is hydrogen. If it has 2 protons, it is helium. If it has 8 protons, it is oxygen, and so on. These are the elements.
