I was 2 credits short of my MA, but I featured it on my resume that MA is my latest degree. HR asked for proof and didn't have it. I have been employed for almost 2 years with them but they are asking for diploma once again. What can they do? Fire me?

Yes, they can fire you for falsification of employment. But that will depend on the type of work and whether the degree is required in their opinion for this position.

Why? Because you stated that you had the degree as a basis for obtaining your employment. If they bypassed a candidate who did not have a degree and you stated that you did have the degree already, then there is a credibility issue involved for the company.

If the MA was required for the job and you don't have the degree, it is considered a falsification of records. At the least, they can require for you to furnish an official transcript of your schooling to verify your degree. If your company is an "at will" employer, it has the legal right to terminate your employment at any time with our without notice and with our without cause. Whether they will terminate you for it, I have no idea.

Your best recourse is to enroll in the remaining courses and then "fess up" to HR about the truth. If you can prove that you will complete (and then show proof) within a set amount of time, perhaps they will be willing to allow you to finish your schooling without losing your job.

If having the degree was an essential prerequisite for the job and you told your employer you had it, then the employer could argue that you made misrepresentations to get the job. Also, if you signed an applicaiton stating that all information was true, it may be problematic. I have seen employers terminate employees for fraud.

However, since you have been there two years, they have a lot invested in you. Hopefully, you have been doing a good job. How about completing the two credits and getting the diploma? Is that possible? You may also want to be honest with your employer and say that apparently you are 2 credits short -- in the grand scheme, 2 credits is not much. Being honest and finding a solution will make you feel better and bring you respect.

hi, i'm in HR. in many cases the respond is not any, by no ability. A resume might desire to basically look conservative and professional. even however, i do no longer think it somewhat is the case in photographs or layout fields. In imaginitive fields human beings have a tendency to be greater accepting of that. So i could incorporate extremely of it and notice the way it is going over. keep in mind however, you would be judged on the layout artwork you upload besides because of the fact the resume, in the event that they're designers, so till curiously rather excellent, i could go away it out. stable success.

Yes, they can and probably will fire you.
I'd say you're in trouble.
What's the problem? Why didn't you just finish your degree? 2 credits short? You've had TWO YEARS since you lied on your resume... and you still haven't completed the degree? You could have earned a SECOND M.A. during that time, if you had worked hard at it.

You were hired under false pretenses, it is very possible that they will fire you. Telling fibs, no matter how big or small on your resume can come back and bite you. Let it be 2 days, 2 weeks or 2 years after you are hired. You falsely represented yourself on that resume, and they have every right to terminate your employment based on that.

Sorry I know thats not what you want to hear, but its a possibility.

Not only can they fire you; there are some recent cases of teachers and policeman who have been required to repay part of their salary because they lied about their degrees.

Your employer can call and check on whether you graduated or not. It's a matter of time. You may want to meet with the HR department and come clean.

i am in HR and lying on the resume can easily be a valid reason for termination. since you worked there for 2 years and if you had been doign well all along they might not be all that harsh with you. but i would come clean with the whole thing.

You can get fired for lying on your job application.

It happens alot. It has happened to some pretty prominent people, including recently someone who was a dean at Harvard University.

It becomes an ethics violation and can lead to dismissal. They can easily contact the school and find out if you have graduated or not.
