"y 5/2" looks like "y times 5, divided by 2". If you want to indicate an exponent, do it like this:

y^(5/2)

Additionally, y^(5/2) is not a problem that can be solved. You have to write a valid equation like
y^(5/2) = 3
or something similar if solving for y is to be possible.
