My son is an incredible artist (drawing), and his passion is to go to art school and have a career in art. He is interested in making movies, or drawing comics, etc.
What are the top art schools in America?
He is only 13 right now, but it's never too early to start the research. He would start applying for scholarships maybe in the 10th grade..?
thanks for your input.

re fantasy football: he is a pretty smart kid. He is 4.0 GPA to this point. His SAT scores are at 12+ grade level, so he's smart enough to do much better paying jobs than art will pay (I am a graphic designer - web designer also)...but it is his passion to draw.
I have raised 2 kids as a single dad for 13 years - so we get plenty of dad-son time. (in fact, posting this question was part of our dad-son time)
He asked me to research finding the best art school..so I am letting him be the kid he wants to be.
I have kept them from advancing him beyond his class (to let him be a kid)
I prefer him to go to UNC (GO HEELS), but he informed me today that UNC wasnt the best art school ;)
I understand Jr. Colleges, but a major art school will look better on a resume'
He may have to do Jr. college to get started, but that's not the goal. His goals are higher than that.
He attends a private school that will have him beyond 1st year Jr. College by that point.
Thanks for all opinions.

Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California is a well known and respected college. Dont force him to do art, just let him develope on his own. I was naturally gifted to draw since birth, and I never took any art classes untill i needed an elective class to fill my schedule in High School. That was my senior year!!!
That's when I took my first drawing class...I learned watercolors, oils, pastels, acrylics...just the basics....

that was enough for me to start expolring...and now I'm a Graphic Designer, and an Industrial Designer. I suggest to avoid art schools that will give private lessons, etc...or art summer camps...they are all a waste of money...
I've taught at one of these schools...and trust me, they are in it for the money...and so are most private art schools.

At 13 your child is still very young, let him enjoy being a kid.

When he gets to 16 or so, start taking him to a few art shows, or an art college...just take a tour. Mybe an art Museum...just some father son stuff.
The visual stuff he sees there will be sure to inspire him to go into art as a career. Have him take college classes at a comunity college when he's, a junior in h.s.
Community Collges are under-rated..and for the money you spend there, you can get a lot of knowledge.

I got My B.A. at a public college, and my B.S. at a private Art College...in the end....it doesnt really matter what school you go to...it's the drive and passion that your son will have, that will get him where he wants to go.

Hope that helps

CIA = California Institute of the Arts in Valencia California is one of the best and difficult to get into. You have to have a really REALLY good portfolio that exhibits your various talents.

Keep it up dad. Keep him going. I wish I had taken my chance and I was too afraid to. I had an opportunity for my own show as soon as I graduated from high school and I could have had a free ride to CIA since I was then just exiting foster care.

otis in LA
cal arts valencia
art institue in chicago
rhode island school of design
www.academyart.edu/ - thats where I went
Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design

some of these are private so cost can be very high. most major colleges in the states offer a type of art as a major. you might want to consider a community college that is good for art to start. dont have any to recommend but google it. yay 2points!
