Me and my friend want to do a duo for our State band competition this year, and we would like to do something along the lines of a "fur elise" duo, except on the trombones. I have spent some time searching, and was just wondering if someone knew if there was such a book that had a fur elise duo in it for trombones, and where I could get it?

I found nothing. Well, almost nothing.

I didn't do a deep search, but I did think to myself "would that really work for just 2 trombones?"

The thing is, the piece works because of the piano's sustaining ability; those bass notes really aren't just eight notes -- they are dotted quarters. So I think it would take at least 3 trombones for the piece to sound remotely like the original. Look at this and and get an idea of what I mean:

With only two instruments you'll get a very choppy, dry sounding "Fur Elise".

Creating an arrangement for two trombones is not difficult -- just get the piano score and write the parts out -- they are both C instruments. But you can only do the first part, because the rest of it requires as many as 5 instruments.

Why don't you try one of Bach's Two Part Inventions instead. I am assuming that you are not professional players, so when you go about trancribing piano works for trombone, you will either have to transpose to a key to "fit" the music for both instruments, or change register as needed (and as musically as possible) to keep the upper instrument's range below the Bb above the tenor clef.

Go to this site:

and either call the 1-800 number or use the "Contact Us" link at the top of the page. Direct your request to Bill in the band department. If a duo book for trombones that contains Fur Elise is available they should be able to locate it for you. You may have to settle for one that has other classical pieces in it.

They respond to e-mails fairly rapidly.

Good luck in your quest and your competition.
