In the United States, you are permitted to play your sport for 4 years. You can be at any level. The only NCAA educational requirement is that you are registered at the University/College.

My son played Division I football at Nebraska in the late 80s and early 90s. He played his last 2 years of Undergraduate and both years of his Master's Program. The year that Nebraska beat Tennessee for the National Title, one of their starting defensive lineman was in the 2nd year of a Ph.D program in microbiology.

I was also an NHL scout for 20+ years and scouted several NCAA games and I met dozens of athletes who were in Postgraduate and Professional (Law School, Med School) programs. As long as you are a student, and are elgible to play, (and make the team) you can play.

Most colleges I know of only allow a player to play/participate for 4 yrs UNLESS they are injured at which time they will get a medical redshirt. Then you are allowed a 5th yr. But no you cannot play while you get you M.A. Now you can graduate early (See Jason Williams of Duke University) and still play your full four yrs. But other than that and barring a injury, you get 4 yrs in college to play (whatever sport you play).

You only have 4 years eligibility, mandated by NCAA rules. The only way people get to play more is if they are red-shirted, so they practice with the team, but don't play any games. Or if someone gets injured during a year, they can apply for some kind of injury pass to get another season of eligibility.
