They are both socket 478 Pentium 4. The reason I'm asking is because last time i tried to upgrade a PC i wanted to go from 700MHz to 1.2 or 1.4GHz and it didn't work (guessing my motherboard didnt support that speed.

The computer is a HP Pavilion 9720. The motherboard is the stock one.

Proprietary motherboards tend to be less upgrade/tweaker friendly than retail boards. PC makers prefer that you buy a new PC rather than upgrade. Upgrading definitely prolongs the life of most PCs, thus it is bad for their new PC business.

Your upgrade will be really limited by what your current motherboard could support.

PC hardware enthusiasts usually shy away from proprietary motherboards. Even information on them is hardly available to the public.

it depends on that motherboard , which I can not id at this time. There is a good chance it may not be able to run a better cpu because of the speed of it's front size bus, muliplier, voltage, etc.

or it may be able to after a bios upgrade.

Contact HP for the specs on it.

or if you open the case and can see the mfg and model # of the motherboard then contact them. if it is an Asus you can go to their website, search for that board and you should find a list of cpu s supported by that board.
