It defiantly needs an over hulling. But in my opinion what would improve it is a more personalized lessons. However this cannot be accomplished when you have more than 15 students in your class. The thought that many want teachers to make every student successfully and then cram 35 kids in the room is hilarious.

What would you put in its place? Throw it out? I do not think it would be a feasible solution to throw out conventional schools. I think it is important that we evaluate why traditional schools are not working where we live. I can assume that you were thinking of American schools when you posted this question. Oh, if only people would read books like Martin L. Gross' Conspiracy of Ignorance. Knowlege is at the start of change. People need to know what is truly wrong at the core in order to put pressure in the right places (Teachers' colleges, for starters) to effect change.
Unconventional schooling like home schooling has a vital place in the role of teaching our future generations. However, public and even private conventional schooling exists as the other strong poles in the triangle. All should be supported equally; not erradicated.
Throw out the traditional school system?
No, my friend.
Radically change it from the inside to the outside?
Yes, by all means, let's do it!

Good question STEVE....put a *STAR*....by your name!
I could'nt agree with you MORE! The system as it NOW stands, is turning out kids who can't read or spell properly, (just look at yahoo answers) and no proper grammar, punctuation or sentence structure. Most can't read a map, or point out on a globe or map of their country, and find where they live. North American students are falling rapidly behind the rest of the world, (in ALL areas) at far too great a rate.
.....SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE !....."SOON"!
There are so many problems that need to be adressed and possible solutions discussed. This forum does not give time or space to discuss them all. However, thanks for bringing this up, and making more people aware of the problem.

Get rid of the 3 month vacation. Keep Christmas break, and put two weeks between grades. With less time off, students won't lose so much information. The first nine weeks of every school year is spent reviewing material they were supposed to learn the year before.

Throw it out? No, that would be like throwing out the baby with the bathwater. It could stand to be tweaked a lot though.
I like the idea of having options. A one-size-fits-all school system does not serve every student. Perhaps specialized schools would be a better idea...
