Is intermittent brown spotting a week or more before your AF a symptom of a short luteal phase? If you did ovulate, and then get spotting, are the chances pretty low that you might still be pregnant?
Also, does anyone have experience taking progesterone to remedy this problem--how did it work for you, did it help you concieve, were there any side effects?
Ok, I guess this is more than one question but what the heck! ;)
Thanks

It can be a sign of low progesterone, but it's not always. Don't take progesterone unless you know for sure though. It's expensive, and you have to take it carefully or else you can cause an early miscarriage if you do conceive. You have to start taking it the day after ovulation and keep taking it until either your period comes, or until you are 12 or 13 weeks pregnant, which is when the placenta takes over. If you stopped taking it too soon your lining would shed and it would be a miscarriage. And yes, there are side effects. This is why you need to have it checked first before going through all the trouble and expense. To know if you have a luteal phase defect you need to use OPK's or BBT charting. I was worried about this but once I tracked ovulation I found I had a 12 day luteal phase which is fine.

The spotting could be implantation bleeding. I have a short luteal phase and low levels of progesterone and never had spotting. My doctor prescribed Clomid to help with this. Last cycle I didn't ovulate and this cycle I did and I am now 12 dpo and this is the longest my luteal phase has ever been. I found out I had a luteal phase defect from charting my temps. I recommend you do that too. Use the free website fertilityfriend.com to help you get started. Best of luck ttc!!!!

brown spotting does not necessarily mean a luteal phase defect or even that you are not pregnant. it could be implantation bleeding.
are you charting your basal body temp. this is the only way to know at home if your luteal phase is too short.
additionally, i agree with the other poster. speak to a doc before you use progesterone b/c it can lead to miscarriage if you end too soon.
