Avs fan, please explain how Roy is a better goalie than Plante. Having seen both play their careers, Roy was a pale shadow of Plante. Statistically he isn't close to Plante. And Plante didn't need pads the size of the Brooklyn Bridge to compete.
Again, aside from Roy's longevity factor giving him the most wins, what makes you think Roy is better than Plante?

If the Conn Smythe trophy had been around prior to 1965, I think there would be more than one 3x winner. As for Plante, Plante moved Montreal from perennially finishing 2nd to Detroit to finishing first. As for Montreal winning their 1986 Cup due to Roy, I beg to differ. The 1986 Canadiens were 4th overall offensively, and led the 86 playoffs in goals scored. While Roy may have been the Conn Smythe winner, it was due more to the fact that it was a team effort. It wasn't a single-handed Roy deal.

1993..........was all Roy. He gave a mediocre hockey team a Stanley Cup (and a record 10 overtime wins).

1996.......Colorado was 2nd overall when the trade was made, and finished 2nd overall.

But aside from winning percentage (and the difference is minimal), there is no statistical evidence that supports your theory that Roy is better than Plante. The first 5 years of Roys career were in the small pad era........and he was just a good goalie, not a great goalie.

You need to get your hands on some Plante video, preferably from the 60s. I think you're in for a treat!

There is absolutely no way Kiprusoff is a better goalie than Luongo. There is also absolutely no way that Plante is better than Roy. The results of the last round are completely absurd. So all I will say now is that Vladislav Tretiak is the best goalie remaining in your little goalie tournament.

"Like I'm telling...": I've said this before, Jacques Plante played for the Canadiens of the 50s. ANY goalie would've had the same statistics and success playing for those teams. I have to say though, that I haven't seen Plante play, so I can't judge with my own eyes. I have however seen Roy play, and I can tell you that stats do NOT tell the whole story. Roy is the only reason the Habs won their last two Cups. His stats were bad, because he had a bad team in front of him. Besides, who's the only person to win 3 Conn Smythe trophies? Roy.

~~

Roberto Luongo is VERY far from being my favorite goalie. All I'm saying is Luongo is better than Kiprusoff. I don't like either of them, but I'm making an observation. Just because Luongo played on a horrible team most of his career, doesn't mean he's worse than Kiprusoff.

Plante, Tretiak, Parent, Vezina

Mike: I saw Plante play and even into his late 30s he had more commitment to the game on a night to night basis than Roy did. You never say Plante get yanked for allowing 8 goals in 45 minutes and then getting traded. Plante also invented a lot of things that goalies now days do as part of the game, like passing the puck up ice. And if Roy had to wear the same equipment that Plante did, thin pads and no mask he would have given up hockey at the peewee level or switched to defense.
