The only hard-and-fast rule I can think of is to put things near where you need them, such as coffee cups near the coffee maker, pots and pans near the stove, and the eating dishes fairly close together elsewhere.

When I move into a house I just put things away where I think would be good and then see if its a good working kitchen as I go along and in this house I ended up moving the dishes as I found I needed to put them where I could unpack and put straight away without have to move as much like a Quick turning circle it works Quicker now as I can pack in from the sink one side and pack into the cupboard when finished on the other side.Plastics all in one cupb behind me.and Glasses and casserole dishes beside dish washer, works well.pots under oven.

Start with the largest of items putting them in the largest spaces! When your all done you may want to try putting some stuff you use alot like dishes & cups in a more conveinient place. What has always griped me is the way people who own a home dont utilize (Build) cabinets all the way to the ceiling. There is alot of wasted space there if not used!

I try & put dishes away they are easy to get to like after I wash them. Before I use them. Pots & pan hang above stove. To save space, some in cuboard near stove. ect.
After you use kitchen long enough , there will be a right place for most everything.
Same for each room.
