Hi all,
I need to know how to setup a simple network using manual IPs, not Automatic IPs given by my Linksys Wrt45g router setup as "Automatic Configuration DHCP" under Internet Connection type.
My operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

My ISP is Optimum Online and I believe I have Static IP.
I CAN either use Automatic DHCP or Static IP in my Wireless Router.
In the netwrk setup section, my local ip add is 192.168.1.1 // subnet: 255.255.255.0

This is the tricky part for me,
I enabled DHCP Server
Starting IP Address is "192.168.1.5"
Max numbers of DHCP users is "2" (I want it this way only).
Next Step, I went to my wireless network card and in the TCP/IPv4 Settings, I manually changed my IP to 192.168.1.5 // subnet 255.255.255.0 // def gateway 192.168.1.1 - In my other laptop I did the same exept 192.168.1.6. They're networkly connected but I cant connect to the INTERNET! I did this using the Static IP but no go! It works when IPv4 is set to automatic obtain

I think you need to set one up as a "server" and the other as a "client" if they are on the same network. Not really sure how Vista is set up.
DHCP main function is to Automatically setting the host config settings (IP addersses and default gateway). I am not understanding why you want to circumvent this process? So, I would try the same process, set one up as "server" and one as "client" and disable the DHCP.

If you are using a wireless network connection, then most probably you are also using DHCP. The easiest way to overcome this is simply by going in to your network settings and making your changes as needed. You will also need to make sure your IP is on the same subnet as your router. In windows, control panel - network connections - right click and select properties on the adaptor you want to change. This will work for a wired connection. If you are using wifi to connect to your router, then you could do it the same way if windows is handling the connection, otherwise you'll have to modify it in your helper application.

If you start DHCP at 5, you should put static addresses below 5. Your subnet and gateway settings look right. Confirm the address on one of the pc's with ipconfig /all and ping the router at 198.168.1.1 to make sure thinks are the way yiou expect.
