Why can't you kids do your own work? If you have the time to post it on YA, then you have the time to look it up on Google.
Why are kids so lazy nowadays? And why do we contribute to it?

To those of you who truly use Y!A for help, there's nothing wrong with asking for help, when you are truly stuck and you've tried to figure it out on your own. This comment was not directed toward you.
This comment is meant for those kids who haven't even attempted to do their own homework; those who just come straight home from school and post all of their homework questions on Y!A, then waits for someone else to give them the answers.
Like one person commented, you all have access to resources that many of us did not have growing up; most of the answers to your homework questions can be found on the internet, if you bothered to do your own research, but you all don't even try.
You are doing yourselves a disservice; and those of us who "help" these kids (yes i'm guilty of it too), we need to stop. The next time they ask for the answers, don't give it to them. If they can't find the answers, just point them in the right direction. But for goodness sakes, DON'T DO IT FOR THEM!

Well, I ignore questions when someone obviously just transcribed a list of questions their teacher asked (like every character from a major book, etc.). But sometimes you can tell someone is truly stuck on how to do a problem and could use a little help.

I'll be honest, it annoys me when someone just gives the answer - because if the person is truly asking because they're lost, that's not going to help them, and if they're asking because they're lazy, they shouldn't be rewarded. But if someone goes through and explains how they found the answer, it can help the person asking figure out how to do it the next time. Because, really, you can't expect Yahoo! to help you throughout every time you need to solve an equation or find the verb in a sentence!

Some kids may be lazy, but it is unfair to make a blanket generalization.

Kids today have access to resources I didn't have when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s. I had libraries and books, and I did just fine. But I can understand how kids now might be tempted to rely too much on Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo! Answers, and other Internet tools, instead of doing their own research.

I am humbled by the questions I see posted in Homework Help. I couldn't begin to answer the math questions, and even some of the history and English literature questions have me stumped.

But I am also saddened to see how many kids don't have the foggiest notion of how to write a sentence, let alone an essay or a poem. Schools should not be putting so much pressure on kids to learn facts and figures. Schools should be teaching them how to think, to learn ... and to love thinking and learning.

I am glad to be able to share what I know with young people. I am glad to be able to show them how to organize their thoughts and to put them in writing.

Like you, I am reluctant to help kids who are clearly shirking their responsibilities as students. But I am willing to give most kids the benefit of the doubt. I believe they are truly overwhelmed by the pressures they face in school. I hope that my answers help them to make some sense of the world they live in.

I agree with you mostly. There are some questions worded in a way that will be beneficial to the asker but not completley give away the answer. If a student asks or help, as in how to do something or an explaination for something, I'm happy to help. But I understand. I'm esspecially annoyed with the To Kill A Mockingbird questions. I had to read the book, we all did. READ IT! I wish the kids would just read it and do the work! It's not as hard as they think. I completley agree and I think it tells alot about kids today...they rely on others for answers and don't have the work ethic to find it out and investigate it for themselves.

Why are kids so lazy?
I don't think that that's the right question. I've asked for help before, because I was confused and for some reason mathematical symbols would appear blank on my screen. There's nothing wrong with asking for help if you're stressed or confused.
And why do we contribute to it?
Because we are humans, and we have empathy to the problems of others.
I can understand your frustration, believe me, but what may seem simple to you may be causing someone else much anxiety.

To Cerina:

There's a difference between helping and doing it for them. These kids want us to do the homework for them.

Original question:
I was going to defend them until I went through and read several posts. I'm obviously used to the college students. They seem to want actual help, not the answer.

I usually don't. I posted an answer once to a kid trying to get us to do his chemistry homework, and told him to do his own work for his own good, and Yahoo gave me a violation for that answer. People should show more intelligence about homework problems.

Well...this section is called "Homework Help". I guess if people want to help kids (and there are people who want to...for points, I guess), then they should be allowed to. If you can't stand doing another person's work for them, you're free to enjoy the other aspects of Y!A.

I usually need help for my Geometry homework.
Because even my teacher agrees that the book doesn't describe in a way she'd like.

I usually ask for clarification.
But for whatever reason, people always give me the answer instead of HELPING me understand a concept. =/

I agree. I try to avoid asking homework questions because I'd much rather find the answer on my own. (How else do you learn?)
Everyone's all like "Can you 'help' me with my math?" or "my essay" but it's not helping, it's giving answers... (though I answer the math ones anyway because I like mathhh [but I do it step by step so that they can understand it] =]) Oh well... maybe if no one answers, they'll stop asking.

Haha. Couldn't agree more! Just saw a kid post a full page of chemistry questions. Ridiculous!
