check the connection at the starter. A lot of times the positive batt cable will have a bad connection there and it will open the circuit and you will lose power. if there is a bad connection there you could be getting enough amperage through to run the truck after you get it jumped but not enough to start it by itself. That would also explain why the truck would die when the lights are turned on.

if that doesn't work check the batt terminals and ends for corrosion. you could just have a bad connection at the bad or somewhere else. you said you had the alternator checked. Did they take it off the vehicle? if not check all the connections on the alt. as well. you also said you replaced the batt. so Now you have a good BATT a good ALT. now about all there is is a bad starter or a bad connection/ wire. if all the connections are tight and there is not an corrosion on the connections then check amperage at each point. also that year of vehicle should have a solenoid they go bad all the time. check the connection there.

personally it sounds like a connection prob. due to the fact that when you add more amperage to the system you can start it, and when you add a larger draw" the lights" the vehicle shuts off. that tells me that there is a corroded connection or a bad wire somewhere. Hope this helps!

If you have a new battery and it does not crank over, the problem is probably in the starter. If it cranks over OK, but does not fire up, the problem might be with the cap, rotor or ignitor.

Sometimes when the ignitor is going bad, it will still produce a spark, but signal to coil is very weak. If you can take a test light to the neg side of the coil while it is running and it stalls the truck, it probably has a bad ignitor.

A bad rotor or cap will get a nice fat spark at the coil wire, but a weak or no spark at the plugs.

This year did have some problems with the ignition switch. Try turning key slowly from the run position to the start position. When they go bad, the key turns through the start position and is dead. No power transmitted to the starter.

A 20 year old truck is bound to have problems--too many to guess at so get to a good shop and stop guessing. By the way you need to drive at highway speed for at least an hour to recharge the battery--IF it is a good battery. Jumping and then expecting it to be recharged wont do anything at all. My guess is it really needs a good shop to do a good service on your truck. They do NOT last forever. Good luck
