My 6 month old is 2 pounds away from the maximum weight limit of his infant carseat. I'm looking for a new seat at a reasonable price. Which carseats are the best? (highest safety ratings or ones that you have had positive personal experiences with)

I drive a Dodge Avenger. It's a 2 door with a small backseat. The carseat actually fitting back there will also be a requirement.

They all have to pass the same safety standards to be sold in the stores. You should look for one that fits your life style. If your baby is prone to exploding diapers, get one with a fabric that will hide stains better. Consider if you want to have a cup holder or not. Consider how long do you want the seat to last? Yes, you can get ones that will grow with your child, but do you really want to fight to keep it clean and in good shape all that time? Do you need something that has extra car bases so you can transfer it between cars, or can you get one that doesn't sell the bases?
There is no 'best' for every mom. You need something that fits your lifestyle, your vechile, and your child's personal needs.

I think that Safe'n'Sound / Britax? make the best car seats available. They have a multitude of seats for all different ages and weights. I now have the 'Maxi Rider' booster seat from safe'n'sound and their younger seats are reversible (rear facing and forward facing) and can be used up to 0-18kg.
I would recommend getting a reversible seat as 6mths is too young to be forward facing no matter how much they weigh.(its about neck strength should you have an accident) and then in a few months you can put it the other way and you can use it from birth again next time you have a baby.
I'm pretty sure they do have the highest safety rating and they aren't cheap but they will save your son if you have an accident. I've heard nothing but great things about them.
Best of luck

The Britax Marathon Convertible Car Seat is great, very easy to use and has great safety features. A little expensive but worth it!
The Evenflo Triumph Advance DLX Conver. Carseat is a cheaper, yet still safe, option. I think it holds up to 55 lbs.
CHeck the ratings on the websites of the stores you are looking at. They were very helpful to me when I was choosing mine:)

I'd suggest an Evenflo Triumph. We have one and it even fits in the back of our small VW Jetta. It's a comfortable seat with easy to adjust straps and we paid only about $100 for ours.
As to the person who said to check with the fire department, please be wary of this. MOST fire departments actually do not have someone who is a certified car seat technician to put seats into the car. Once you have your seat you can call your local fire department or police station to see if they have someone certified, then you can go there and have them properly install it.

Safe n Sound Platinum. Actually the next model down (not sure about the one after that) has the same safety features too, just doesn't have the speaker in it. They are known as/made by Britax in the UK I think. Safe n Sound is the Australian brand name

I have the Eddie Bauer one - It converts from rear facing baby seat to front facing to toddler. It costs more up front, but you won't have to buy another car seat for the entirety of your child needing one. Very safe seat...I would not trade it for the world.

I would suggest that you contact your fire dept. to find out what seat actually fits in your car before you buy.
