Let me throw on my Docs and a flannel as I reminisce of times past...
Radiohead (new album... soon!) - I'm a Kid A fan, but they have put out nothing you could categorize as crap, so thats just amazing. Even The Beatles had some iffy stuff.
Smashing Pumpkins - I seriously wanted an Ice Cream Truck and a bunch of paint.
Pearl Jam - Ten. Enough said.
Nirvana - i remember an obsession with Heart Shaped Box
Soundgarden - Chris Cornell is forever my rock god (The Day I Tried To Live... gives me chills)
Gin Blossoms - Good poppy rock. The perfect Ying to the grunge Yang

Love 90s rock! Some of my favorites are 311, The Smashing Pumpkins, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Sublime, Third Eye Blind, Weezer, Gin Blossoms, No Doubt (are they rock?), Beck, Hole, Soundgarden, Silverchair, Bush, RATM, and Alice In Chains.

Wilco, Radiohead, Beck, Soul Coughing...
And Hootie and the Blowfish is NOT alt-rock.
It's college rock or pop and it only barely qualifies as music.

I enjoy Radiohead, certain songs by Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and R.E.M. There probably are more bands, but I can't think of any right now.
Here are my favorite songs by them:
Radiohead: "Paranoid Android"
Nirvana: "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Soundgarden: "Jesus Christ Pose"
Pearl Jam: "Jeremy"
Red Hot Chili Peppers: "Suck My Kiss"
R.E.M.: "Losing My Religion"
And ranking them by my opinion:
1. Red Hot Chili Peppers
2. R.E.M.
3. Radiohead
4. Pearl Jam
5. Soundgarden
6. Nirvana
Yeah...the 90's were pretty good, but I like the decades before better.
