I've yet to see a TV dad who was even close to the wonderful person my dad was. Ward Cleaver is trying, but he has to overcome his past with a father that sounded overly harsh.
My father died soon after his 47th birthday of a massive heart attack, and Mom and I probably talk about him every day, remembering something he said or did. He was funny, kind, gentle, thoughtful, adventurous, handsome, charming, and totally family focused. He taught me about movies, actors and actresses, and science fiction; and he showed me the secret of being a sketch artist.
One day, a friend of the family said that he had dropped by one very hot summer day just as Dad was closing the gas station we owned/operated. He said, "Hey, why don't you go get a custard (soft ice cream) with me before you go home?" He said that my dad told him, "Nah. I think I'll go home and get my wife and kids, then we'll all go out for ice cream."
That's just the way my dad always thought: family first.
What TV dad was ever that perfect?

Tim Taylor from Home Imporvement. He seems like a cool dad who cares about his kids.
