The light has been on for a while in my car. Today, it started blinking, which I know indicates a more serious problem. But suddenly it stopped blinking and is constant again now.

most OBD 2 equipped cars have 2 modes of check engine operation. One means something relatively monor needs service. The other is more agressive & may have a flashing indicator means a more "urgent" service is needed. With thousands of trouble codes no one knows for sure.Next you're car may refuse to start or may cut-off depending on how sever the problem becomes.

A blinking MIL (malfunction indicator lamp) indicates DTC(s) (diagnostic trouble code), where a class 'A' missfire exists. This could be caused by faulty coilpack(s), spark plugs, wire(s) if equipped, on the electrical side of things. On the MECHANICAL side of things, this could be caused by failed valvetrain parts, valve timing gone out of time (timing belt or chain jumped teeth), and so on. A class 'A' missfire is one that WILL result in catalyst damage, if it goes unrepaired for too long. With that said, you had better get this problem fixed before it becomes more expensive. Hope this helps.

That normally indicates that a problem is current, as opposed to a problem that occured just long enough to set a code. As in, a failed part, or an intermittent short or open circuit. The flashing just means that the problem is occurring at the time it flashes.

in most cases it means that the problem has went from an intermittent problem to a constant problem with the car, this means you need to get it checked out as soon as possible ,you need to get the computer scanned and see what trouble codes it left in it,this will tell ever who is going to work on it what they might need to repair it with, good luck with it.

On Ford's, the blinking means that engine damage COULD be taking place while your driving due to the problem. when mine did that, it was a cylinder misfire which was repaired by installing new plugs.

On some of the newer cars it can be as simple as needing an oil change. I know mine was low on some fluids a few months ago and was doing similar to yours. When they were added, the light went off and hasn't come back on.
