Since the sin function is periodic, with period 360°, sin(-240°) = sin(-240° + 360°) = sin(120°). This, by turn, is equal to sin(180° - 120°) = sin(60°) = sqrt(3)/2.

sin(-240 deg) == sin (360 + -240) = sin(120 deg)

120 deg is on the second quadrant
forming a 60 deg angle with the x-axis

this makes sin(120) == sin(60) == sqrt{3}/2

If you have a Windows PC you do have a calculator. Bring up the calculator and click on VIEW and select Scientific for the Sine and other functions.
