then how come so many people screw it up and survive the attempt?

Maybe it's harder than we think....

Thoughts?

Just to settle some nerves, I am NOT considering or contemplating suicide. My question was somewhat satirical in nature, as I think that to voluntarily end one's life is not very "easy."

It takes an awful lot to take a person to that point, to a degree of hopelessness or pain in which they truly see that life is no longer worth living and would rather end their life than see if, given time, it improves.

I hesitated to answer this question because I'm not sure of your motive for asking it. I hope you are not contemplating suicide. Someone who seriously wants to commit suicide deserves compassion and help not judgement and condemnation. Obviously when someone is attempting suicide things are not easy for them and their perceptions whether real or imagined are clouded by their current difficulties. I don't think anyone should commit suicide unless they are terminally ill and have no hope except to suffer without any quality of life and that is a difficult judgement to make even when making it for oneself. I think the Oregon model for assisted suicide is a good one that involves trained qualified physicians and strict standards. Those people seek assistance because they don't want to fail and simply increase their already considerable suffering. Buddhism offers a good model for dealing with suffering and may help someone. Other faith systems may also help. If you know someone who is contemplating suicide please show them compassion and acceptance and get them some help. We cannot know what impact and difference we make just by living each day and to take that away prematurely is a grievious loss to everyone and very sad for the victim. I can only imagine but I think suicide must always be hard (maybe that's a good thing as many do survive their attempts and live and learn and get a chance to heal). Someone who is seriously considering suicide should seek professional help and all of us should do whatever we can to stop them and help them in their pain.

Many times a suicide attempt is a 'crying out' for help. A part of them wants to end it all, but another part wants someone to help them. They are in a great deal of psychological pain. People have said 'they took the easy way out' but the truth is, life wasn't easy for them and trying to take their life wasn't either. They need help. They need understanding. It's very difficult for the family members and friends that have tried to reach them and don't know how.

Oh, I wouldn't think it would be easy at all, and I wonder how many people back out of an attempt when they just can't go through with it.

I also wonder how many people change their minds but it's too late.

I think the "easy" in easy way out means you don't have to deal with whatever your problem is. The easy way out would probably be dying from natural causes, don't you think?

To me, the greatest deterrent (not that you asked) to suicide is the idea that you'd have to come back in another life with the same problems and have to live through them all over again. Who'd want to start over?! It's much better to continue on and try to figure it all out.

People who survive the suicide attempt are those who wanted to but at the last second hesitated and didn't finish. Those who survive try to commit suicide because it's their way to call for help. It's a way for them to ask for attention. These people are NOT crazy, they are NOT psychotic, they are depressed. They feel they lost control and the only thing they CAN control is whether they live or die. It isn't really hard to commit suicide, but many people get scared doing it.

If you're thinking of doing it, please don't, you're going to hurt more people than yourself!

Honestly, I don't think suicide is the easy way out. I mean think about it, what happens when you die? I'm a Christian and I believe that believers go to heaven, unbelievers go to hell. Also, suicide is the ultimate sin cause you can't be forgiven. So, those people need to stop and consider what will happen before they attemp it.

Because they dont really want to kill themselves, they want attention and sometimes any attention is good attention.
or they do want to but when it comes to the crunch they get scared and call the police or ambulance . or they call a friend to say goodbye but the friend calls help.
I work in an emergency dept and see it all the time , the other reason is they dont really know what to do and dont do it well enough, then they feel sick not dead and feeling sick sucks so they go to hospital.....
If someone is truely suicidal they can do it , but it really isnt the answer to anything, there is lots of help out in the community but it is up the the person to be open to that help.

First of all its a sin to kill oneself. Second, its an act of cowards. Once you die, you are over, Finished. But thats not the way out. Live your life. There is a reason behind every birth. When you couldn't stop yourself from coming into this world, then how could you decide that you have the right to finish this life???? dont be mean.

If you are a challenger and if you really have an identity, then no matter what, no matter how harsh the issues and life have been to you, FACE them. it might take longer to get the solutions, but after every sunset, there is a sunrise.DO not FORGET that~!!!!

Please look at this question at a deeper level. What motivates the individual making the attempt. One sure thing is before they make an attempt they are in a lot of mental and emotional pain.

The people who survive probably just wanted to make a point and get some attention. If you really want to die, it will happen.
