I have DSL. I am going to get a wireless router. I have a laptop. I was told that I have to have a computer connected to the wireless router at all times in order to get internet wirelessly to other computers. Is this true? I thought that once you were done setting up the wireless router with your modem that you didn't need to always have a computer pluged in to the router. My friend has cable internet and he doesn't have to have a computer connected at all times. What's the deal? Please help.

confident, you're able to do what you describe. you will would desire to purchase 2 ethernet cables long sufficient to connect your computers to the instantaneous router which you acquire. the relationship is from an ethernet card on your computers (look for the hollow that feels like a telephone jack, yet slightly larger) to a sort of four jacks at the back of your new router. Your modem will connect (cable) to the router, no longer a working laptop or pc. Your pc will would desire to have the capability to log onto the instantaneous router--and you will desire to do a little issues to guard it, tremendously while you're in a dorm, else all your acquaintances will use it, too. Get some help placing it up--yet you will desire to call the community some thing different than the default call service via the producer, turn off the published of the community (or your equipment) call, use MAC filtering, and maximum considered necessary--use WPA encryption, with a sturdy key (password), some thing no longer actually guessed or broken.

All you need to worry about is making sure the broadband modem is on and connected to the router in order for wireless internet to work. The only computer you need running is the one your browsing with. Otherwise, you can shut them all down.

No, you do not need to have anything connected to it at all once you have it set up. The router shares the connection, not your PC or laptop. Whoever told you that either has an incorrectly configured system or does not know what they're talking about.

Its not true that you have to have computer connected to the system at all times. I don't have to do that, say when your rearranging a room, I have 4 computers and there not always running or connected at the same time. I can always get on with a laptop with no problems.

You should use a wired device to configure your router. After that there is no need to have a wired device.
