Currently I have a Dell Dimension 3100. It has a Pentium 4 3.2ghz CPU with HT technology. According to specs, the motherboard is a "Intel 915GV chipset". It has no AGP or PCIe slot. Had 512MB DDR2 PC-4200 Ram to start, I upgraded with a 1gig stick currently 1.2g now.
I was lookin into some Core 2 Duo chips for gaming and video conversion, will any fit on this motherboard?

Anyone have a site with a list?

I have a 256mb PCI nvidia 8500 card but it's still PCI. IF a core 2 duo chip wont fit, should I even bother upgrading it anymore? Just save up for a new system?

If you have PC gaming in find, forget PCI cards. The PCI bus is just too SLOW for 3D graphics acceleration.

Move up to the fast PCIe platform. If budget is tight, spend more on the videocard and start with a cheap Intel E2160 set up. You can opt to overclock it or later upgrade to E6xxx Core2 Duo.

Based on the description, you want a whole new PC.

That motherboard won't support a Core2Duo, and even if it did, as a gamer you *NEED* a better video card - and your motherboard won't support that. You'll also want 2GB of RAM, if you want to play the newer games or do any video work.

I used to like Dell, but their systems have gotten really expensive and come with too many garbage programs on them. I bought my last PC from Velocity (velocitymicro.com) Their systems are relatively inexpensive, and use good parts.

Even though I'm a gamer, I actually went to their Home Office section and built a high-end machine there. Their gaming PCs come with SLI-capable motherboards, which allow you to use 2 videocards...but I think that's a waste of money. I'd rather just get 1 decent video card now, and then upgrade it myself in a few years. That saved me a few hundred dollars.

You need a whole new system.

If you need suggestions, this is about the best you can build for $600.

A decent gaming PC that can play most games on high settings at 1280x1024 can be built for $600, and every few hundred dollars more gets you noticeable better performance/parts. $1,200 will get you a quad-core and a top of the line graphics card that will push most games at 1080p with all the "eye candy" turned on.

Here is a quick rundown of parts you can buy online for the aforementioned $600'ish gaming PC:

$60-70 - 2 x 1gb DDR2-800 performance RAM

$30 - Pioneer 112d DVD burner

$80 - 320gb Seagate 7200rpm Sata hard drive

$65 - Corsair 450watt 33amp power supply

Case is entirely up to you for the look you want and how much you want to spend, but you should always have a case with at least a 120mm intake and 120mm exhaust fan, as heat is what kill electronics. Here's 3 choices at different budgets. Aluminum does dissipate heat better than steel.
