You can't do it for them. Offer support, check out smoking cessation plans, hypnotism, acupuncture, antidepressants, anything you can think of and bring it to them. If they don't want to try it, you have to drop it.
You have to know that quitting smoking is a terrible, terrible thing. My mom died of lung cancer 3 years ago, and my dad pledged on her deathbed that he'd quit. He still hasn't. Think he hasn't tried? It's really, really hard.

I quit smoking 3 months ago. So did my husband. I had been for 25 years and he started when he was 12, he is 55 now. I have no will power. I tried the patches, the gum, and a few other things. My husband went to the doctor for a check up and saw an ad for a new medicine that you have to have a script for. He started taking the pill and so did I. We have not smoked in two and half months. It is great. You smoke the first week and the pill tells your brain that it is not getting the nicotine and so you go thru the with-drawls while you smoke. If I can quit, anyone can. But get sugar-free gum. Sam's sells it in bulk. Remember, it is alot easier if everyone in the house does not smoke. So quit, there is a pill to do it. 5 people at my husband's work have quit this way too.

3 people in my family smoke. I can't control it. Most of the time you can't tell someone to stop smoking and they will listen. You can do a couple things.
1. talk to them. tell them how it's making you feel, sometimes this will help them think about it.
2. talk to an adult.
maybe you can tell them about it and they can try to help.
3. pray
pray to god that they don't get cancer.
most of the time there is nothing you can do.
quitting is very hard.

Smoking is a personal choice that you can't control.
Make sure you mention your dissapointment in their choice, but leave it at that.
You can also tell them that if they choose to smoke around you, that you will not be hanging out with them. They can do what they want, but that it's offensive to kill you at the same time.
That's doing your part.

You can't because it has to be the smokers choice to give up in the first place, or they will never be able to give it up. It comes down to "mind over matter" and the smoker has to be determined to give up.
