I am missing a boot file, so my computer won't boot up. I have a reinstallation disk. Is it possible to use it to only restore the missing file? Reformatting isn't an option. I need everythng step by step, and give me real answers. The last thing I want is a dumb answer during a serious matter.

Guys, I can't boot up my computer at all. After showing the Dell logo, nothing happens. The boot screen with the Windows logo won't show up. So can't access my control panel. Sorry for missing ab it of details. I was typing on a Wii. I'm on another computer now.

I'll pull the page up on the Wii and see how it works. The Wii is in the same room as my computer, so I can view this. Let's hope this works!

It would help to know exactly what boot file and what OS (98, ME, XP, Vista, etc) you're running.

Boot off of the installation disk, select "Repair using recovery console". You will get what looks like a dos box. you can use it to copy files from the installation CD to the C: drive. However, since more than one file might be corrupt it might be better to try a normal "Repair" from the installation boot disk first.

Since you don't know which file the recovery console won't help. Just use the repair option.

By the way, if the hard drive is failing you may have not option but to reformat.

OK, here is the easy way to fix it...take my word, this WILL take care of the problem:

Start up the computer and Boot to the command prompt
(usually you need to press F6 or F8 (depends on your computer) to get to the command prompt

Once you have the command prompt then and type:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

press ENTER

...it will bring up the option to restore your computer ..restore back to a few days ago when the computer was working fine ... YOU ARE DONE! The computer will reboot and START NORMALLY ..all your files will be there .. :)
