solve this by adding.

3x+y=5
x-y=7
-------------
4x = 12 (y's cancel out)
divide by 4

x = 3

to solve for y, plug the value of x (3 ) into any of the two equations:
3(3) + y = 5
9 + y = 5
subtract 9
y = -4

(3, -4)

I think it would be easier just to add the two equations than to graph them.

3x + y = 5
+ x - y = 7
-------------
4x = 12

You should be able to solve it from there.

x = 7 - y; given

3(7-y) + y = 5
21 - 3y + y = 5
-2y = -16
y = 8

x = 7 - y; given
x = 8 - 7
x = 1
