865G chipset will run RAM at 400mhz if processor fsb is 800mhz. I think your processor has a default 533mhz fsb that is why RAM is defaulting at 333mhz setting.

The specifications of your motherboard for memory are as follows: memory memory style DDR SDRAM style of memory Slots 2 x 184 Pin DIMMs Supported RAM speeds 333 MHz • 266 MHz • 200 MHz Max Supported RAM 2 GB under memory style it states that it in common terms helps DDR memory. So the respond is that it does not help DDR2 memory.

In order to get the maximum speed from your RAM, you need to install it in matched pairs. In other words, two 512 MB sticks will be faster than one 1 gig stick, because it's a matched pair and allows dual-channel operation.

But not just any pair of 512s - they need to be a matched set, where both sticks are exactly the same.
