depends on your money situation. hotels are expensive, but afford you the luxury of things like your OWN bathroom.

Hostels are cheaper. There are typically eight people per room. You may be able to rent a private room at a hostel for extra money.

I believe there is a hostel in SF.

Hosteling International
Address: 240 Mason St, San Francisco, CA 94102
Phone: (415) 771-7277

There are hostels between SF and Santa Cruz.

Hostelling International
16th & Cabrillo Hwy, Montara, CA 94037
(650) 728-7177

Pigeon Point Lighthouse Hostel
210 Pigeon Point Road, Pescadero, CA 94060
Phone (650) 879-0633 Fax: (650) 879-9120

If you want to save money, hosteling is the way to go. There are several that allow you to book a double room with your own bathroom.

It's low rent, low key, and you save your money for other fabulous things.

If you want to be close to the basic touristy areas, I would recommend the hostel at Fort Mason. You're just up the hill from Fisherman's Wharf/Pier 39, and you have a fabulous view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Also, Green Tortoise is pretty good, right in North Beach. They have some nice amenities.
