If only it were that simple.
In the equation y = mx + b, there are 4 variables, and each has a specific meaning. y and x are coordinates on a standard Cartesian Coordinate plane, so we'll set those aside for now. m is the slope, which is the change in y divided by the change in x. Two points on the line y = 3x would be (2,6) and (3,9), and if you divide 9-6 by 1, you get the slope, 3. b is the y-intercept. So, when x = 0, y = b.
Specifically, for the line y = -2x + 8, you can plot the y-intercept first. Go up the y axis until you reach the point (0,8), and that will be your y-intercept. From there, go down two and to the right 1 because -2 = -2/1. This will produce a second point (1,6). Drawing a line through those two points should be a graph of the line y = -2x + 8.

y = -2x + 8
Ok, first you need to understand y=mx+b
Mx is your slope ( - 2x ) ( you will go down 2 on the y axis and then right 1 because it's -2/1 =]
Then the B is your Y axis number. So put a point on the 8 of the y axis and then go down 2 , to the number 6 on the y axis and the one to the right. So the coordinates should be (0,8) and (1,6) - Hope you get it. I did it with out a graph, so graph it just to make sure.

for each value of x you need to calculate y
so
x, y
-5, 18
-2, 12
0, 8
2, 4
4,0
5, -2
In this case its a straight line graph.

y=2x+8
when x=0,y=8
when y=0, x=-4
the graph is a straight line passing through the points (0,8) and(-4,0).
