You could view the loss of a job as a failure and a prelude to all sorts of difficulties. You could also view it as an opportunity to find a new and exciting job or career.

The quote refers to our perceptions of situaiton.

You could view an argument with a close friend as something difficult and painful, or an opportunity to have a better relationship by sorting out some of the issues that affect the both of you.

Medical school, or any advanced educational endeavor-- extremely difficult, but each difficulty brings with it a new opportunity to grow in wisdom and knowledge. Marriage might be another example (Einstein was not all that successful at this kind of difficulty.) A literary example would be the story of Odysseus in Homer's "Odyssey".

I was (made) to be a single mother living in the s.f. bay area. At the beginning it was very very difficult, food, housing and daycare. Doing all of these things by ( MYSELF ) gave me a unique opportunity to grow. I became very independent, which in turn gave me the opportunity to become self sufficient and self reliant. Now there is nothing and I mean nothing I can't do all by my self.

You could think of soldiers at war. Very difficult to fight when you risk your life. You have the opportunity to be courageous and fight for the cause, or be a coward and not fight at all.
