Besides hiring an A/C tech, how do you know if the A/C system is adequate for the size of your house? Is there a formula?

You go to any web site that sells air conditioners like TRANE air conditioner systems you see what measurements cover a certain square footage, then you take your square footage of your house and you divide it by that square footage and then you know how many measurements it is going to take to cool your home. There is a formula but you should be able to do the general math by back tracking what size a window unit of a particular ac system covers per square inch and work it back to a larger number for the sq footage of entire home...I hope your getting my idea.
