It is an important day, not just to the French but to every country that fought in WWI- it is the day that peace in europe was declared at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (1100hrs 11/11/1918).

Each country in Europe plus other nations involved use this day (Armistice Day) and/or the nearest sunday to it (Remembrance Sunday in the UK) to remember the sacrifices made by soldiers in WWI and all wars since including the present.

In Britain (and Canada and possibly Australia & New Zealand) we wear a poppy for the first few weeks of November to show our appreciation of the sacrifices made by those men.

November 11th, 1918 was the day the armistice was signed ending world war one. Today it is commemorated as "Armistice Day" or "Remeberance Day", or "Veteran's Day" in different parts of the western world.

...hmmm..all I know is that in Canada this is Rememberance Day. A day where we remember the people that have fallen in the wars and the ones that are still fighting now.....maybe they also have a day of remembering, for WW1 and WW2 on that day...we wear poppies for about a week before.
