My neighbors are sucking up to me badly. But they are in a dispute with other neighbors and I feel they are just trying to get me to cavalier with them against the others. Should I aid these people in their time of need even though this dispute might bring negative output to my life? Or should I just refuse to engage anybody in negativity?

Let them know you don't want to get involved because there are different sides to every story and the truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

Aside from that, you don't want to alienate any of your neighbors and if you choose to remain neutral, you essentially keep yourself out of the spotlight.

Besides, people who will butter you up to prepare to use you are probably not people you'd actually want to be friends with or go to bat for anyway.

Refuse to engage. What is an enemy now will be a friend tomorrow and where will you be?
