Some guy hikes/swims (depending on terrain) 1 mile south, 1 mile east, and 1 mile north. He finishes at the same point at which he started. Indentify all the possible places he could have started.

North Pole

Can't go South from the South Pole.

The answer would be North Pole. Some of the people replied South Pole, but if you were at the South Pole you wouldn't be able to go 1 mile south since that is the southern most point on the planet. The answer must then be the North Pole. Hope this helps.

If you note that the world is not flat like a map, the only place this could happen is the North Pole. Since you go 1 mile south, follow the contour for 1 mile east (not getting closer or farther from the north pole), then you only need one mile north to get back to that point.

The south pole could not do the same, you cant start traveling south if you are at the southernmost point in the world.

There are 2 possible answers.

1. If he was using a magnetic compass he would have started at the North Magnetic Pole - somewhere in eastern Canada.

2. If he was using a True North Compass he would have started at he North Geometric Pole.
