rat pinkies are much to large for a small garter snake. try pinkie mice, feeder cricket, guppies, some thing small but make sure that its alive. until the snake starts associating you with food it will need to be feed live food to stimulate its feeding instincts.

well, ur trying to give ur snake a baby rat right? well, one thing to think about is that rats , even baby rats, are too big for a garter snake to eat. u should buy baby pinky mice, i still buy them for my baby cornsnake. also, when feeding ur snake, dont feed it live food, as it may harm the snake, in this case, this shouldnt be a problem, but as the snake grows, it should eat frozen food, then thawed. if ur snake does not it it today, then just throw the rat away, and wait a couple or 3 days until u atempt to give it some food again. they can go a long time without eating, as much as 3 weeks, as long as they have enough water, everything ill be ok, but try to get it to eat at least once a week. hope it helped.

It probably wont eat a rat. Since most every garter snake is somewhat aquatic, it will readily eat frogs, toad, minnows, before it will even concider tangling with a rodent. Do some research on your species and take it from there.

Do not feed your snake live food. Most likely, your snake was probably introduced to frozen food, so this is probably different. You can start feeding it live food when you know the snake better. Most garder snakes don't eat pinkies (pink rat) most eat worms. So try that, if you do feed it pinkies, then get them frozen and then heat them in warm water, so they seem to have "body heat". Then the snake might eat it. . .

A baby pink rat is going to be much too big for a baby garter snake! You need a one day old mouse pinkie or something even smaller. Please read this webpage on feeding garter snakes:

Take the rat pup out that is most likely too large. Try feeding small guppies or minnows in a water bowl. Good luck.

Baby garter snakes eat earthworms, slugs, tiny minnows and amphibians.
Not rats.
Why do people REFUSE to research their herp's care before they get them?

Feed it a pinky they are mice and not as big as rats.... so that should be better.... and besides I don't think that you are torturing it that is what most snakes eat.
Good Luck
