some kind of thing that allows you to connect two ethernet cables together, perhaps if one isn't long enough to span the distance between a computer and a router? if so, where can i get one?

Buy a longer Ethernet cable.

yes there is.

My daughter had the same problem she went to radio schack. and they helped her find what she needed.

Sorry this was like a year ago and I cannot remember what they called it.
