The edge of your nail is very thin and sharp and can press into the skin of the toe causing pain, when it breaks the skin it is referred to as ingrown. By keeping the nail length even with the end of the toe, and using a straight across cut you can limit this happening. For now, trim the nail as described. Get hold of a metal nail file (because they are very thin) and gently run under the nail from center to edge and carefully lift the edge up as you work out. This will be a bit painful for you right now. When you get to the end (you will have only been using the tip) run the rough body of the file up under the nail and out. There will have been some filings and scaly buildup removed. Do this one or two more times. Just for now to relieve the pressure, take a nail clipper and turn it vertical to the nail and place it centered on the nail and make a small clip (not to the quick). This will relieve the pressure at the sides of the nail for now. Now soak your feet (or yourself) in hot soapy water. Pour a little alcohol or witch hazel on the toe. Keep nail clipped to end of toe, file straight and file under edge 1x per month.

You have an ingrown toenail. Go to the pharmacy and buy Dr. Scholl's ingrown toenail remedy. If they don't have that, buy wart removal solution. (They are the same chemical).

The idea is to soften the outside edge of your toenail which has decided it needed to grow under the skin instead of in your nail bed where it belongs. If we can soften that nail, your pain will be better. If we can cause that nail to dissolve, your pain will go away permanently.

The idea is to take a little of the solution and put it on a tiny piece of cotton ball. Then, using something small and flat (maybe a nail file?) tuck the cotton ball under the edge of the nail which is causing you pain, right where the pain is. Leave it there for a few hours, and do it again as necessary.

Sounds like an in grown toe nail. usually get it because of the way the toe nail is cut but sometimes because you have let the nail grow too long.

If there is enough toenail there to cut a v in the nail on the sore side far enough in that you have 8 to 9 mm of nail from the edge then stuff cotton wool under this piece of nail lifting it from the toe. it will hurt like hell but should get better.

If you are unsure about doing this or it gets worse you should take yourself off to the podiatrist (Chiropodist or foot doctor) fo have it treated. If you do not deal with it it will become infected and you may have to loose the nail.

Ingrown toenail is what you have. This is when the nail grows out and the side part catches and digs into the fleshy side of the toe. It can be prevented by cutting the toenails straight across instead of rounding them. They can also be caused by broken nails. It very well could work itself out, but be careful that infection does not set in. If pus comes out for pain continues for more than a week, see a podiatrist. Good Luck they HURT.

It sounds like an ingrown toe nail. The side might have grown in to the skin. This will make the whole toe hurt. Soak your toe in warm water and epsom salt to loosen the nail and then see if you can lift up the edges of the nail and place some cotton under neath the nail. If that relieves the pain then leave the cotton.

If the pain is coming from the joint, and not the nail, it might be gout.

If it's coming from the side of the nail, it could be an infected ingrown toenail.

If you can wiggle your toe without having excruciating pain, then it's probably not gout.

***EDIT*** Gout is a disease, like arthritis, that is caused by uric acid crystals forming between the joints--most commonly, at the base of the big toe. It causes the area to become swollen and hot, and it will hurt like hell.

It could be an ingrown toe-nail. Depending on how you file your toe nails (which should be filed straight across), there could be an infection which could possibly require an antibiotic, or alternatively, place some "drawing" ointment on a plaster for the next 2 days or so and "pull" the infection out.
Placing a hot facecloth over the infected are several times a day might help and put the drawing ointment on at night.

Ingrown Toe-nail most likely. Get some epson(sp?) salt mix in some with warm water in a bucket and soak your toe for 30 mins or so. That should help ease the pain. If you do that regularly it will help it become less painful. You might want to see a doctor though, they can remove it.

It sounds like you may have gout... where uric acid crystals in your blood stream congregate usually in the big toe causing it to be excrucuatingly painful. It does tend to come on quicky as you are describing. At times it can be so painful that even a sheet lying on top of it is too much. See your doctor for treatment. He/she will help you figure out what in your lifestyle is causing it, it may be your diet. The acute epicode should not last longer than 10 days but see a professional anyway to prevent it from hapening again. And if it isn't gout, your doctor can figure out what it is and treat it. Try googling gout to learn more. Good luck.
