How do NFL refs get assigned particular games?

And does the same crew always work together? I was wondering if they can request to ref certain games or if it is a random pick which team gets which game. Or maybe a rotating schedule?

NFL referees are assigned a game by the head of referees and they go as a team. Walt Coleman is my neighbor.
