LA is 100 years over due for a big earthquake. No knows when it will happen, but when it does it will be huge.
My son lives and works in LA. I want him to move, but he is in the movie industry and will not, as for being prepared I don't think you really can do anything.

Tectonic plates are shifting. Western California is moving northwest at a rate of (roughly) a couple of centimeters per year along the San Andreas Fault. It doesn't sound like much, but when there's no movement for 30 (or 40 or 50) years along this faultline, the pressure builds up, and it releases all at once. This is an earthquake. It will happen in or around LA.
But nobody knows when. It could be tomorrow, or it could be twenty years from now. You should have canned food and bottled water at home, along with batteries, flashlights, blankets, and a portable radio.
If you really want to be safe, you could move out of LA.

There was a professor at Stanford some years ago who used two factors in predicting quakes. One was a close proximity of the Moon to the Earth, especially during periods of an eclipse. He coupled that with measurements of radon gas in deep wells. Sounds like tin-foil hat stuff but he was only four hours off on the Sylmar quake of 1971 and six hours off on the Whittier quake.
As far as being prepared and safe, there should be an earthquake survival guide in the front of your phone book. Read it and comply.

What you my have heard replaced into gossip. human beings have a manner of adjusting the information around while they don't understand the technology at the back of the information that they are listening to and/or reading. while everybody is being instructed that the continental plates are under rigidity and that should deliver approximately a quake. no person stated the cost of the quake. this is a million M or bigger... no person is acquainted with. Now as quickly as you examine the above, you will get a team of people who don't understand squat approximately what they are reading, so they take their own opinion and purely run with it.

there is no way to know when it will occur but you can be prepared. store up some
tinned foods
bottled water
basic toiletries
a change of clothes/underwear
an AM/FM radio with spare batteries
a torch/flashlight with spare batteries
a couple of blankets
a list of contact names and numbers
arrange a meeting point for you and your family to go to in the event of an emergency. make sure it is a safe place.
Keep this stuff handy in a backpack or two so you can just pick it up and go in the event of an emergency.

LOL you are pretty stupid if you think anyone can predict when and where an earthquake is going to hit. i knew that it wasn't possible to do that when i was like 3 years old. in actuality, there are earthquakes every single day here in southern california (and the rest of california and the west coast). there was a 4.0 quake here only a couple weeks ago outside of l.a.. if you're living in l.a., then freaking educate yourself about it. it isn't hard. go the library. look up tectonic plates and earthquake safety on the the internet. come on, you're smarter than that.

make sure that your large items of furniture book shelves etc) are securely strapped to the wall. that your cabinets have the little things that keep them closed , and make sure you have food & water for 3 days.
I bought an earthquake preparedness kit here: http://www.boss-safety.com/shop/safety-preparedness-kits-earthquake-c-416_3_1466.html
which is great. I added some more high calorie food bars & im ready...
