since itunes shrinks the files down for the ipod, (assuming that's what you mean) around 4000 songs, according to Apple. However, they tend to overestimate the song length, so it will probably be around 4500.

This depends a whole lot on the format of the song and the compression.

In MP3 format, a 3 minute song could be under a megabyte, or it could be around 5 megabytes. In WAV format (same as on a CD) that same song would take maybe 20 megabytes.

Western Digital's website advertises about 62,000 songs will fit in 250 gigabytes. x = 62,000 X 16/250

Clearly, your mileage may vary -- but I'm sure WD's numbers are based on typically compressed songs of typical length.
