In most cases, it is perfectly acceptable to belong to multiple professional or academic fraternities. In some rare cases, there may be bad blood between certain groups, making it more difficult. Only the social fraternities would demand exclusivity, being that they tend to be secretive societies and guard their rites and rituals as too private to be shared with a member of another similar group.

Any student is allowed to be a member of only one National Pan Hellenic Council organization such as Delta SIgma Theta, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta SIgma etc. But a student can also be a member of two Non-Greek organizations in additon to being a member of the NPHC such as Gamma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Phi Omega etc. and of course nothing can stop you from being a member of a honor society. Now it is different on each college campus so you would need to find out the specifics on your college campus.

If both are social Greek organizations, then no, you cannot join more than one. It is not a matter of being looked down on - you would be kicked out of both. However, you can be a member of one social and one or more academic honor society, like Phi Beta Kappa, without any problem.
