I think you wanted to say that you had 30 cents, in which case you would have a quarter and a nickel. However, the way you have phrased the questions, the coins could be anything.

You missed the actual catcher in the riddle. It's supposed to be:

I HAVE TWO COINS IN MY HAND THAT EQUAL 30 CENTS. ONE OF THEM IS NOT A NICKEL. WHAT COINS DO I HAVE?

The correct answer is

1 quarter = 25 cents
plus
1 nickel = 5 cents

Well, One is a nickel that's for sure.. There is not enough information to accurately guess the coins other than we know that you don't have two nickels.
