I'm a manager in the IT industry. I would like to know how other IT managers handle job stress in this business...

So much of our jobs depend on others to be sucessful and many times other people have agendas of their own. Some agendas are self serving, but some of them are business.

In any case, how do you manage stress? I know that excersize and nutrition play a part, but I'm more interested in how you handle the mental demands. I know I can keep my emotions out of it and I know it's only business. But what do you do when no matter where you turn, you can not make progress?

Some days are good and some days are bad, but the days that are bad cause me to want to leave what is a great company.

Going to the director for help and support is not an option. Just Like in your companies, a sign of management weakness is the beginning of a slow career death.

I'd like some feedback.

I think you need to identify your areas of stress. You are experiencing feelings of helplessness and hopelessness that are causing you stress. So work first to pinpoint these areas.

It sounds like you're having a bit of a problem with personnel. If this is the case, then perhaps in high stress situations, you need to monitor the work more closely. Set up weekly or daily meetings to review where the project is and how much progress has been made.

Treat people fairly and with respect. Don't overmanage and don't leave them with feelings that you're not interested in helping them.

If this is starting to eat you alive, then its time for change. You have to determine what that change will be, whether it will be in your behavior, your outlook or your position and company.

Some people are natural leaders and some have to really work at it (and still might be inadequate). Unfortunately in IT, sometimes a great worker is a terrible manager. So you need to assess yourself in that area as well.

Apply for other positions , with other companies .

There are lots of jobs out there and sometimes people need change .
They can get stuck in ruts & don't see the ways out .

Do Not , however , resign this one until you have a keeper / offer elsewhere .
