To put on mascara, one (I don't say women only) have to push the head back . Try that, look up... now tell me: is it easier with mouth closed or a bit open?

Widening the eyes without opening the mouth is a bit strained. Those of us not blessed with big eyes really need to do this I think.
OK, so, maybe some of it is concentration. Normally, you are nosebreathing, but mouthbreathing seems to work better. After all, that's a rather delicate operation. Just ask a girl who has bumped her eye with the brush! OUCH!
Why do people close their eyes when they yawn really wide? It's sort of scary when you're a passenger in a car with a sleepy driver.

A few years ago I heard this, so ever since then I have made conscious effort to keep my mouth shut when putting mascara on. No idea why its common to do this with your mouth open. I've only done it a couple times since then.

Seriously- it is possible to put mascara on with your mouth closed...but it is easier to put it on with you mouth open so you can maintain wide eyes without messing up as you put mascara on.

Well because keeping your mouth open makes your eyes wider. Didn't you know? This makes it easier to put your mascara on.
